Maintenance Tips

BMW Motorcycles of Western Oregon (BMWOR) Maintenance Tips ->

  • Fuel Tank: Keep your fuel tank full during the winter months to reduce the amount of air in the tank, as Oregon winter air contains lots of moisture and moisture leads to corrosion of fuel system component and water in the fuel system itself.
  • Battery: Today, motorcycles are more electrically demanding, so a fully charged battery is very important to allowing the motorcycle to operate as designed. Short trips kill batteries, just as bad as having the motorcycle sit for extended periods. Make sure you regularly use a battery charger that is both rated for your type of battery and monitors the health of the battery and can fluctuate between charging and resting modes.
  • Tires: Proper tire pressure is key to getting the most life out of your tires and fuel economy. Tire pressure should be checked before each ride and set to the correct rating based on recommendation by the manufacturer for load.
  • Fluids: After the first service (600 miles), engine oil should be changed every 6,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. Transmission (gearbox) and final drive oil should be changed every 12,000 miles or 24 months, whichever comes first. Depending on the type of brake system on your motorcycle, brake fluid may be changed as frequently as every 12 months. Clutches, front suspension, and coolant systems are changed at various intervals too. Call the BMWOR Service Department at 503-597-7097 to determine what the appropriate interval is for your particular motorcycle model.
